War Is Never Enough!

An exhibition from the collection of the Department of Non-Professional Art of the Silesian Museum in Katowice

Artists are people of exceptional sensitivity. They are often the ones who do not turn away when unimaginable and inhumane events occur. They register these experiences in memory and, through art, create a repository of remembrance. Frequently, this takes the form of a non-verbal record of personal experience; at other times, it becomes an expression of solidarity with those who suffer, who are deprived of their sense of safety, forced to abandon their homes, or who have lost those closest to them.

The ability to articulate emotions through the creative act functions as a form of catharsis, enabling the release of intense experiences. This process is not limited by cultural background, social environment, artistic attitude, or aesthetic orientation. It applies equally to non-professional artists – outsiders, amateurs, intuitive creators, and art brut practitioners alike. Distinctions of category or label ultimately lose their significance.

The immediate impetus for the exhibition was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, the core focus of the display lies in portraying the suffering and trauma of the so-called ordinary individual, whose entire world is destroyed by war.

Through this exhibition, we give voice to those on the other side of the barricade. It is an expression of resistance and refusal to accept the age-old, ongoing manipulation of human fate. It is the voice of artists for whom the creative act has become a means of materialising inner protest — a cry drawn straight from the heart: “Enough.”

The curator of the exhibition in Lublin is Sonia Wilk, Head of the Department of Non-Professional Art at the Silesian Museum in Katowice.
