What Happened to Us. War...

The latest exhibition of Marcin Wrzal’s work invites viewers to encounter large-format paintings on canvas. The artist, whose distinctive visual language is already well known to his audiences, once again moves along the boundary between representation and abstraction, this time offering a painterly reflection on war and its impact on the human experience. His perspective, however, extends beyond the event itself. It is a view of the individual whose sense of security and familiar order of the world are shaken by an overwhelming experience of fear and uncertainty. War does not have to be experienced directly to become part of everyday life.

Among the recurring motifs are eyes, once again gazing directly at the viewer, and the artist’s characteristic, deformed human figures. Recognisable forms are simplified and transformed, acquiring an ambiguous and charged character. Intense colours are set alongside almost monochromatic canvases, in which colour appears only as a subtle accent. In this restraint and deformation, echoes of fear, trauma and a world that has lost its sense of familiarity can be found.

Importantly, Wrzal does not depict war directly. Its presence is felt instead in the emotions, the tension and the way in which the depicted human being confronts a reality touched by violence. Empty spaces and planes, overlapping like an “image within an image”, contribute to the composition and tension of the canvas, once again leaving the boundary between the recognisable and the abstract, the imagined, fluid and undefined.
