A War in My Mind,
A War in the World
“I am sending these to you so that I do not have to burn my works” – with these words, an anonymous artist introduces the paintings donated to Art Brut Gallery. Together, they form a deeply personal and unsettling account of war, violence, fear and inner struggles.
The large-scale oil paintings portray a reality marked by aggression and hatred, while also becoming a space in which the artist’s inner experiences confront the dramatic events unfolding in the contemporary world. Alongside them, the miniatures deserve particular attention: intimate records of thoughts, emotions and observations. These tiny paintings contain an immense sense of human anxiety.
The exhibition thus raises questions about the boundaries between war experienced within one’s own consciousness and the war taking place around us. It explores how history permeates individual experience and initiates an encounter with art that may have emerged from a need for salvation – not only of the paintings, but of the artist themselves.
This is the third exhibition by the Unknown Artist at Art Brut Gallery. We know they are watching us…
