Exhibition Review
Tomasz Bosko finds his photographic subjects in seemingly ordinary places. He has been photographing outdoors for over a decade, primarily in and around Lublin.
The rivers, lakes and wetlands featured in his photographs occupy a particular place in the exhibition. Their banks, covered with grasses and trees, form natural frames within the compositions. At times, the water reflects the illuminated sky; at others, it almost disappears among the vegetation. Alongside broader landscapes, there are photographs focused on a selected fragment of the surrounding environment.
Light plays a particularly important role in these photographs. Sometimes the camera is pointed directly at the sun; at other times, light permeates seemingly prosaic landscapes, bringing out a new quality in them. Sunsets, light reflected in water and rays breaking through the clouds alter the character of familiar places.
Winter scenes also feature among the photographs. Snow, leafless trees and a limited palette of colours create an entirely different atmosphere from the summer images, filled with greenery. Alongside them are photographs taken in warmer seasons, when vivid colours and strong light give the images a different character altogether.
Bosko does not limit himself to wide views. He often focuses on a single element: a reflection in the water, the arrangement of branches, grass, a tree or a fragment of a riverbank. Urban photographs also appear, showing that this way of looking can be found not only among fields and waterside landscapes. Ordinary places become interesting when the right light appears.
“I photograph because I enjoy noticing a particular kind of beauty”, writes Tomasz Bosko. The exhibition is a record of this personal fascination with his surroundings, their light, colours and changing nature. The artist understands that light is what creates the image in photography, both literally and figuratively. He can give ordinary places and everyday scenes a different character, bring out a new quality in them and make us see a familiar view differently.
